Hey Dave
I liked point two:
Product knowledge is critical. i have just spent a week in London and wrote about that very same point from the perspective of a Cab Driver....

Will keep coming back

Great list! Will be sending a link to the post to all our clients.

Would like to add one and that is "Stop the Blame Game". You control your destiny. Stop whining about your manager, your competitors, the marketing department or whatever. Go get yourself a positive attitude and a winner's outlook.

Not to be Forest Gumpish but "positive is as positive does".

Dave, these are all very good points, but #2 is one of my favorites.

Depth of knowledge, experience, contacts and clients in a vertical market position you as the go-to person.

The ability to ask deeper level questions and show your expertise with those questions, backed up by a client list in that industry will help differentiate you in competitive situations.

Become involved in trade associations, write articles, present on relevant topics and develop referral sources and clients in that industry.

Dave,

I'm honored that you included my book on referral generation in your list.

I think the most important--and in many ways the most difficult--is #10. As sellers we are so tempted to look for the quick fix, for the easy magic cure that we forget there's no such thing. Success comes from hard work and learning and implementing disciplined, repeatable, effective processes.

Fortunately, there are really great folks like you reminding us that the quick fix is nothing but an illusion.
