My New Kindle
I read a lot of books. I just got a Kindle as a gift. It is one of the coolest pieces of technology I’ve had in my hands. In case you don’t know about Kindle, it’s a device on which you can read books. The books get downloaded from the Kindle (it’s an Amazon brand) site via EVDO. You can buy those books from you computer or directly from the Kindle.
There is a very basic web interface, but the best web-based feature is a link directly to Google or Wikipedia. It also comes with a built-in version of the The New Oxford American Dictionary , so you can highlight a line of text and get the definitions of every word on that line.
Right now I’m reading The Gravedigger’s Daughter. It’s the June selection of a book group where I am a member. I’ve downloaded a bunch of other books as well, especially some non-fiction best-sellers, like A Whole New Mind.
If I didn’t have this new Kindle, I would be dragging them around with me on business trips.
There’s another point. Books are $9.99. Some are less. That’s a long way from the $25 or more you’ll pay for a best-seller.
The only issue I have now is it’s another piece of equipment to add to my Nuvi, video iPod, Treo, laptop, European GSM phone, camera and assorted power and charging cables.
